Partners of British citizens & Permanent Residence.
Applicants in a relationship with a person who is a British citizen or has Permanent Residence in the UK, or is applying for Permanent Residence here, can apply for permission to enter or remain in the UK with a view to gaining Permanent Residence if their:
husband, wife or civil partner; fiance(e) or proposed civil partner; or unmarried/same-sex partner.
Applications made as a husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried/same-sex partner that are successful, are normally granted permission to come and live in the UK for up to 27 months on a spouses visa or family visa, or to remain here for another 2 years if they are already in the UK when they apply. 28 days before the end of their qualifying period, applicants can apply for permission for Permanent Residence ('indefinite leave to remain') in the UK as their partner.
Applicants as fiance(e) or proposed civil partner that are successful, are normally granted permission to enter and live in the UK for up to 24 months while you get married or register your civil partnership. Once married or register your civil partnership, applicants can then apply to switch into a spouses visa of husband, wife or civil partner. However whilst in a fiancee catagory you are not allowed to work or study until you switch into spouses visas or family visas..
If the applicants partner is a British citizen or settled foriegn national in the UK and the applicant has permission to enter or remain in one of the above categories, you must tell the UKBA (UK Border Agency) if your relationship breaks down permanently before applying for Permanent Residence in the UK.
Applicants under the age of 21 years old will not be given permission to enter or remain in the UK in any of the above categories if they apply before the date of there 21st birthday. Only exception to this rule is If you or your husband, wife or partner is a serving member of HM Forces, the minimum age is 18, not 21.
Applicants must ensure they provide all the necessary documentation at the time of submitting their application, and only accepted documents specified in UKBA guidance.
Applicants who fail to provide specified documentation; will not be contacted to request them. Therefore, applicants that fail to send the correct documents may be refused.
All documentation used as evidence must be the original (not a copy) unless UKBA specifically say otherwise.

Fiancee Applications
Applicants and their future husband, wife or civil partner who are both in the United Kingdom but at least one of you is subject to UKBA border controls, you will need to get a certificate of approval before you get married or register a civil partnership in this country exceptions in the case of some religious marriage ceremonies.
Applicants outside the UK, will need other documents before they can come to the UK and get married or register your civil partnership. These documents you need will depend on whether you want to stay in the UK once you're marriaged or civil partnershiped.
Applicants will not need a certificate of approval or other documents if each of you meets one of the following conditions: Applicant is wedding a British citizen; or EU national of a country in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, or is a family member of a national of the EEA who has the right of residence in the UK; or the applicant has a certificate of entitlement in their passport giving them the right to live in the United Kingdom; or Fiancee or civil partner is not subject to UKBA border controls.

Children outside of Marriage, and Children of persons on Spouses visa's, civil partnership visas.
Children of applicants who have temporary permission to enter or remain in the UK. May be able to bring child dependents to live with them in the UK.
Only applicants with sole responsibility for their child or have serious reasons why they must be allowed to come to the UK, are normally granted leave to remain or enter, they will not be allowed to come and live in the UK unless both parents are normally living in the UK.
There are additional requirements to be meet if the British national or the Permanent Resident wants to adopt a child abroad or bring an adopted child to the UK.
