On a general visitor visa, you are allowed to remain in the UK for a maximum of six months at a time (or 12 months if you are accompanying an academic visitor). When you enter the UK, the length of your permission to enter will be stamped in your passport. If you are given permission to enter for three months or less and you want to extend your stay to the maximum of six (or 12) months in total, you will need to apply for an extension using the application form FLR(O).

Will it help if you act as a guarantor on a general visitor visa?

You cannot guarantee that the person you are sponsoring will leave at the end of their visit. If UKBA decide not to issue a general visitor visa, it does not mean that UKBA doubts what you have told them. It's because, immigration rules state, it is the general visitor applicant who must satisfy the entry clearance requirements or the further leave to remain qualifying requirements for entry or continued stay.

Rights & Responsibilities

After arriving in the UK, some applicants may be required to register with the police. If this applies to you, this requirement will be written in your passport and you will need to register within seven days of your arrival in the UK. To register, you will need your passport and the registration fee. 2x passport-size photographs of you are usually also required.
